Anticipating the experience: what I expect from my first ChurchWorks conference

The following post is from Ruth Perkins Lee, congregational services manager, CBF, Atlanta, Ga.

My life is in transition. I split my weeks between two cities, having recently accepted a position in the CBF Atlanta office while my family is still in Auburn. This transitional period has taught me to be intentional about where and how I spend my time now. Rather than mindlessly going through the motions, I am recognizing the need to be fully present and engaged in the moment while finding experiences to look forward to.

In a few short weeks I’ll be heading to Fort Worth, Tx to attend ChurchWorks for the first time. Cognizant of the opportunity and anticipating the experience, I reflect on what I hope to find there.

I’m expecting community. I’m expecting to see old friends and feel like we’ve never been a part. I’m expecting to meet new friends who feel like old friends.

I’m expecting to meet people whose names I know and whose faces I will learn, those whose life story sounds like mine as well as those whose story does not.

I’m expecting to be amazed.

I’m expecting to see the face of God, to experience the work of God, to know the peace of God. I’m expecting to worship.

I’m expecting to laugh, to tell stories and to listen. I’m expecting to celebrate stories as others give voice to the presence of God.

I’m expecting to hear honest accounts and acknowledgments of the hard days. I’m expecting to find comfort in those who have walked this part of the journey before as they offer living proof that it can be survived. I’m expecting to offer comfort to those who are walking where I have been.

I’m expecting to see our community at its best, doing what we love and know so well. I’m expecting to encounter God, to live the story of God’s love.

I’m expecting to come home, to bring with me the memories and stories and to carry within me the experience. I’m expecting to be renewed.
