CNN’s John Blake has covered the intersection of race, religion, and politics for decades. His work has won him multiple awards, elevating him to one of the senior writer roles at CNN.
Just in the last few weeks, you’ve written on the great Harry Belafonte, the expulsion and special appointment of the two Tennessee state representatives, the alternative Evangelical Jimmy Carter, and an in-depth look into the work of Rev. William Barber against White Christian Nationalism.
However, this summer, Blake released a book about his experience growing up as a mixed-race kid in Baltimore with a white mother he knew very little about. There are two critical questions in the book, “Where is my mother?” and “Where do I belong?”
“I clenched my jaw and pursed my lips. This is so unfair, I thought. Nobody prepared us. What was I supposed to feel? Was I supposed to call her Mom and cry out in joy? How could I feel anything for someone I had never met,” reflected Blake on the first time he met his mother at 17 years old.
