DECATUR, Ga. — The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and the director of the International Missions Department of the Ukrainian Baptists are calling for prayer for the Ukrainian people during this critical time in the country.
Despite a truce, fighting has continued in Kiev in the Independence Square area and some media outlets are reporting that more than 50 people have been killed and hundreds injured.
Pavel Unguryan, a former member of the Ukraine Parliament and Ukrainian Baptist leader, wrote in an email that his prayer is for “both parties to stop the escalation of violence and find a solution through negotiations and reconciliation.”
He also reported that the Ukrainian Baptist headquarters in Kiev is being used as an infirmary for the injured and sick.
The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship has field personnel serving in Kiev, five miles from most of the violence. Gennady and Mina Podgaisky help provide hope to orphans, runaways and children at risk on the streets of Kiev. Jim Smith, CBF’s interim coordinator for Global Missions, has spoken with the Podgaiskys and said they are safe, but that prayer is needed for them, for the people to whom they minister and for the nation.
“The Podgaisky’s are doing great ministry among a group of children in need of something positive in their lives,” Smith said. “The recent shift to violence has forced them to keep a low profile, but they are safe. To this point, the violence in Kiev has been contained to a particular area.”
Smith described the Ukrainian people as warm and loving and added that his prayer “is that peaceful means will prevail.”
