As CBF’s representative to the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina this week, I was responsible for setting up and staffing our booth. With little thought, I placed a stack of our latest issue of fellowship! magazine on the corner of the table nearest to the main aisle where people were walking back and forth. To be honest, I wondered if I would receive increased resistance because of the cover picture and title: “Female Pastors.” Interestingly though, there was what I would call a quiet curiousioty! At least three times, I had to restock this stack of magazines. Were the passersby secretly supportive or looking for fodder to use against CBF in their churches? Only one person during my three days of meeting NC Baptists openly challenged CBF on its support of female clergy. I’m hoping that those who dare to open their copy of fellowship! will be surprised and inspired by the faithfulness of these women who are called by God and who said “yes” to go wherever that call might lead – even to the pastorate! Thank God there is grace and freedom in Christ Jesus.
