James Forbes, former pastor of Riverside Community Church in New York City, was interviewed by Bill Moyers. Moyers asked Dr. Forbes why he was so committed to justice and social gospel ministries. Forbes related a story of being raised in a pastor’s family. His mother prepared dinner every night for the family to eat together. They had a large family. Her question before the meal began was always, “Are all the children in?” If anyone were absent, their plate was served first, wrapped up and kept in the kitchen for them when they came home. Then, the rest of the family would eat what remained. James Forbes said that that experience, more than any other, stressed to him the importance of caring for those who are not at the table.
