Busy Bees

There were several honey bees flying around the window in the den on Monday afternoon and then there were a few more and a few more.  Once I discovered they were coming into the room from the fireplace, I went outside only to see bees flying around the eave of the house near the chimney.  That’s when I called the bee charmer!

She answered the phone and I told her what I was experiencing and she said she could help me.  We scheduled her for the next evening.  When she arrived, she watched their pattern of flying and determined that there was indeed a hive but that it was not very old.  She went to work to remove the bees.

She looked like an alien in her white suite with her head gear and her smoker.  She climbed the ladder and used the smoker to calm the bees.  I was mesmerized as I watched her drill a hole in the eave and then remove more of the eave to get to the hive.  She used what looked like a small vacuum to suck the bees out.

Once she had gotten most of them in the vacuum, she was done with her work.  She emptied the vacuum of bees into a bucket in the back yard.  The bees swarmed around the bucket and then went into the bucket.  I asked about this process and was told that once the queen bee is in the bucket, she sinks to the bottom because she is the heaviest.  The other bees follow her and stay right with her.  She said they wouldn’t leave the bucket!

The bee charmer will take the bees and allow them to create a new hive and produce honey.  This was an amazing 24 hours – this tiny little insect which I might add has a mighty sting, appeared and then was removed as quickly as they appeared.  Talk about community – this hive was new but those bees were busy making the honey comb that would have soon produced honey.

I was just reminded again of the wonder and intricacy of creation and the way our lives intersect with creation.  God saw that it was good!
