Thanks to the combined efforts of 12 churches and service organizations, Baptist Temple Church in San Antonio, Texas, was able to conduct a seven week day camp involving over 100 children this summer. “We wanted to provide a quality summer program for the children of our community at a low cost,” said Pastor Jorge Zayasbazan.
“Many children have to stay home alone during the summer,” said volunteer Carol Edwards, “We can give them a more positive experience.”
More than 30 adults and youth from Baptist Temple worked in some aspect of the camp which included music, sports, Bible stories and crafts. Breakfast and lunch were also provided at no cost. Nearly 2500 free meals were served during the seven weeks courtesy of the San Antonio Food Bank’s summer feeding program. Children did not need to participate in the day camp to receive meals.
Ministry Intern, Deborah Cruz was central to the program’s success. Her attention to detail and problem solving skills kept things moving smoothly. Her internship at Baptist Temple was made possible by grant provided by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. The recent Baptist University of the America’s graduate received valuable training and experience that will serve her well as she fulfills her calling to be a missionary. “I learned a lot of practical things in a short time,” said Cruz.
Baptist churches from across Texas came to work alongside Baptist Temple. “It was a win-win for all involved. They made the day camp possible and we provided a place for them to perform meaningful ministry. The big winners were the children,” said Zayasbazan.
One church was on their first mission trip and others were seasoned veterans. Along with working at the day camp, the groups also served other community ministries and churches including the San Antonio Food Bank, Haven for Hope, Harlandale Baptist Church, Camino del Rey, and Urban Connections.
