Increasingly, cell phones, ipods, ipads, droids, “hip-top” mobile devices are taking the place of desktop and laptop computers. Thanks to inexpensive handsets and affordable prepaid plans widely available, more than half of the people in the developing world will have mobile phones by 2012. Worldwide, there are currently 2 billion Internet users and 5 billion mobile/cellular subscriptions. (www.faithcomesbyhearing.com)
These astounding numbers have implications for your church! And I have lots more questions than answers as I ponder this “wired church” in the digital age.
Do you have a technology “guru” on retainer? What about a person responsible for social networking?
Are you examining ways to reach your community with digital communications specifically cell phones?
Are you blogging theological thoughts and insights on a regular basis?
Have you instituted online donations?
Do you podcast worship experiences?
Has “facebook” replaced the weekly church newsletter?
Does your church have a web page that you populate daily? At least weekly? (not WEAKLY!!)
How are you using social networks to communicate to your congregation?
Who are you reading online?
Has your “Kindle” or “Nook” replaced the many Bible translations on your desk?
How has your marketing shifted?
There are many things for us to ponder, pray over, and respond to in this digital revolution. Are you ready?
