The following post is from Interim Executive Coordinator, Pat Anderson.
Yesterday, Carolyn and I worshipped at First Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia and joined their 150th anniversary. This is a church that was started at the beginning of the War Between the States, became a pioneer in advancing the equality of women and men in ministry (which earned them the high honor of being disowned by the Georgia Baptist Convention), and today has Julie Pennington-Russell as its senior pastor. More than 600 persons joined the celebration meal following the worship service. Bill Leonard preached, Julie presided, the Lord’s Supper was shared, gospel quartet music was enjoyed and an overall good time was had by all. What a great beginning for the Thanksgiving week.
We have so much to be thankful for. I am especially thankful for family. Carolyn and I are blessed beyond measure. We have family and friends, work that brings joy and meaning to our lives, health and laughter all around us.
But at this season we are also drawn to those less fortunate, for persons in storm ravaged places, for those living in bondage, for the poor and sick and marginalized. We remember them, and we also celebrate the opportunity to share our good fortune with them…through prayers and ministry, and giving from our resources.
A special Thanksgiving Offering is an altogether proper thing to do. We can share with many of the world’s lost and hurting people through the Offering for Global Missions. Carolyn and I will write a check today. Let’s all join together with CBF efforts to share the love and presence of Christ as an act of Thanksgiving.
