I have been preaching at a new church plant in Kwa-Zulu Natal for the past year. Every Sunday, the pastor and I collect members in the community with our pickups and gather them together for worship. On one particular Sunday, I heard a strange noise coming from the backseat that sounded like a chicken, but after turning around I didn’t see one. We continued on and gathered for worship.

During the offering the lady that was riding with us came forward and slid a plastic bag under the school desk, which served as the altar. I noticed that the bag kept falling over and when I came up to preach it would ‘squawk’ as if it was confirming with an “Amen”. I realized that someone had made an important offering to God and his kingdom.

Towards the end of the service, the pastor confirmed my suspicions by revealing the chicken to the church and communicated that the person who gave the chicken was following the conviction of the Holy Spirit because God has blessed her with 10 more chickens and wanted to be obedient to God. The holiness of the moment was overwhelming. Even though it was comical to have a chicken dance around during my sermon, the sacrifice of the woman moved me and challenged me to rethink the blessings that God has placed in my life.
