It is my privilege to serve, along with my wife Anna, as CBF Field Personnel in northeastern NC. One of my delights is to serve as Executive Director of Union Mission, a rescue mission in Roanoke Rapids, NC. I wanted to share with you an experience from our work at the Mission.
A few weeks ago, Rev. Mike Eddinger, during the Maundy Thursday worship service at Westwood Baptist, Cary, NC, began talking about serving others. He noted when Jesus washed the disciples feet and how Jesus’ model for us to likewise humble ourselves and do the same. Mike and his wife, Marilyn, the next day drove to Union Mission to meet with me. They brought gifts from their church from that evening worship service.
It turns out that during the worship service he challenged the congregation, as an act of humility and service, to take off the shoes they were wearing and the coats they were wearing. He challenged them to bring them as an act of worship to the altar in front of the church. Several people took their own shoes and coats off that evening as well as their socks. They departed the worship service barefoot and cold as they made their way back home. The gift from this church touched me greatly and I had to seriously reflect upon whether I, myself, would have made that sacrifice had I been there.
We displayed the shoes and coats in our lobby with a sign that indicated the intent of the offering. I could not just do the normal thing with this offering; what would I do with it? It was given in humility from Christians and seemed extra special. Well, I did nothing. God did it all! Over the course of the past few weeks almost all the shoes and coats were given to people in need as they came to us for help. I am reminded of the scripture in Mark 9:35 “If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
My heart is full today as I reflect upon the donations of food, clothing, and finances we have received this month. When we receive a dollar from an elderly couple with the attached note ” this is all we have and we wanted to share it with Union Mission” you must know of the joy I feel and the deep responsibility I feel to make sure this money is spent responsibly. Likewise, when we receive the large donation of thousands of dollars, or those shoes and clothing you must know of the joy I feel and the deep responsibility I feel to make sure this money is spent responsibly.
