CBF’s Paynter to speak at Bush Presidential Center
event on comprehensive immigration reform
ATLANTA – At an event Wednesday in which President George W. Bush is expected to speak in favor of comprehensive immigration reform, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Executive Coordinator Suzii Paynter will discuss the ways immigrants contribute to the United States through service in their faith communities.
Paynter will participate in a panel discussion at an immigration conference at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas Wednesday morning. Three panel discussions are scheduled starting at 10 a.m. The event will also feature a naturalization ceremony where several will become U.S. citizens.
“Immigrants in faith communities have been active in every aspect of congregational life and mission outreach,” Paynter said today, ahead of Wednesday’s event. “Yesterday’s immigrants are today’s leading pastors, theologians and compassionate missionaries. Immigrants are teaching and learning English and citizenship in classes at more than 500 churches across Texas. They are serving as chaplains in the armed forces, in hospitals and hospice.”
Migrants are part of the biblical story — both the Old and New testaments, Paynter said. Even Jesus’ young family fled to Egypt to escape the vicious rule of King Herod.
“Our challenge is to update and align our laws to protect our country, to enable potential and talent, and to unite families” Paynter said. “It is time to fix the broken immigration system and to restore the rule of law. We can reorder the justice system toward fairness which means penalties for those who have entered illegally and lawful status for expanded guest worker programs.”
House Republicans are scheduled to meet this week to discuss an expansive immigration bill that passed the U.S. Senate in June.
CBF is a fellowship of Baptist Christians and churches who share a passion for the Great Commission and a commitment to Baptist principles of faith and practice. The Fellowship’s mission is to serve Christians and churches as they discover and fulfill their God-given mission.
