Assembly Blog — S.C. pastor reflects on Baptist Women in Ministry gathering

By Merianna Neely HarrelsonNeely

This morning, men and women gathered at First Baptist Decatur to celebrate Addie Davis’ 50 year anniversary at the Baptist Women in Ministry Worship and Lunch. We celebrated with the award recipients, and we celebrated coming together to be refreshed and reminded that we are called to thrive.

Shelley Hasty Woodruff preached from Matthew 13:24-30. She challenged us to remember that we are called to grow and root among the weeds. She reminded us that we have “a choice to grow in a foreign field” and “ a choice to thrive before you arrive.” When we stand up for those in need and those who have been marginalized we are bringing the kingdom of God here to earth for everyone to see. We are bringing hope and life back among the weeds.

We also celebrated Pam Durso’s five years in ministry as the executive director of Baptist Women in Ministry, and we were invited to dream big dreams of a God bigger than us all.

As a woman who just accepted a call to my first pastorate, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for those who have been listening to God’s call to examine and expand who a minister is. I know that this group and this worship will be a time to receive encouragement and inspiration in years to come.

What a wonderful time to join together to worship and be reminded that we are not alone!
