DECATUR, Ga.—  In response to the latest U.S. mass shooting on Sunday in Sutherland Springs, Texas, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Executive Coordinator Suzii Paynter has released the following statement:

“While details of this horrific tragedy are still being sorted out, what we know is that the safety and sanctity of a sacred place — a house of worship — has been violated and dozens of human lives have been senselessly taken,” Paynter said. “I spend time in churches across the Fellowship every week, and I love church people. My heart breaks for the lives lost and the lives affected by this latest act of gun violence in our nation.”

  1. I think we need not to be naive and careless given the times we live in. We need to be more aware of our surroundings and set some guidelines about the security of our gatherings. We need not be sitting ducks without any care for the possible dangers around us. Too many of our churches are wide open for anyone to enter without being noticed.

  2. God bless, guide, and protect us. I agree with Frieda- these are new daily realities that warrant precautions. In so doing, however, me must allow our houses of worship to remain the sanctuaries they have always been. Challenging times.
