CBF Podcast: Rachel Held Evans and Matthew Paul Turner, What Is God Like?

By Andy Hale

If you close your eyes and try to visualize what God is like, what comes to mind? Yes, we might all first resist the urge to anthropomorphize the Almighty. But eventually, something or someone would come to mind.

Do you remember what you imagined God to be like when you were a child? Did you ever consider God to be like the stars, the wind, three gracious dancers, an eagle, or the flame of a candle?

Who told you what God is like? This is the question that the late Rachel Held Evans contemplated as she began to pen her very first children’s book in the early Spring of 2019.

“God is like an artist, creative and unpredictable, always busy making and remaking everything brilliant and new,” wrote Rachel.

Unfortunately, the prolific writer could never finish the book as she fell ill and died in May of 2019. So, it came as a humbling surprise when Dan Evans, the writer’s husband, asked acclaimed children’s book author Matthew Paul Turner to complete the book.

We sat down with Matthew, the writer behind the best-selling books When I Pray For You, When God Made You, and When God Made Light, to discuss what it is like trying to complete an incomplete work by one of this generation’s most beloved authors.
