Would you know the subtle signs of abuse if it was right in front of you? Unfortunately, most of us cannot recognize the subtle signs but maybe the more overt ones.
There is a good chance that someone is experiencing this kind of trauma in our congregations. But how might we be prepared to see signs of abuse as people of faith? And what should the proper response be to it?
Many people who experience the trauma of abuse are forced into hiding what they are experiencing. “We had grown up accustomed to keeping family secrets and not airing dirty laundry. We were experts at living with addiction and abuse but never talking about it,” confessed Dr. Elaine Heath and Jeanine Heath-McGlinn on the CBF Podcast Conversation.
Elaine is the former Dean and Professor of Missional and Pastoral Theology at Duke Divinity School, while Jeanine is a licensed professional counselor. We sat down with the sisters to discuss their new book, Loving the Hell out of Ourselves, a memoir about their childhood and journey out of abuse, abandonment, and neglect.
