What’s your theology on human life? Most of us clearly understand the value of our own lives. Still, have we ever thought about the lives of others, especially those that do not fit into our socio-economic-political worldview?
Most American Christians have spoon-fed one conversation on life, pro-life or pro-choice. Abortion has long been one of the most contested debates, culminating in the 2022 overturning of Roe V. Wade. But the theological perspective of life goes well beyond pro and anti-abortion debates. Where do medical coverage and care, immigration, and our relationships with guns fit into the conversation? Do we even know the people most affected by our opinions on these matters?
“I am still a work in progress, and I don’t pretend to have answers to all the questions that will arise in the pages that follow, but I know for certain: Being in proximity makes a difference. Relationships make issues real and complicated and personal,” said Shane Claiborne on the CBF Podcast Conversation.
The founder of The Simple Way in Philadelphia sat with us to discuss his new book, Rethinking Life: Embracing the Sacredness of Every Person. Claiborne is the cofounder and integral leader of the Red Letter Christian movement and the author of numerous books, including Red Letter Revolution, Jesus for President, and Irresistible Revolution.
