Robert Ellsberg, Dearest Sister Wendy

We know the names Fred Rogers and Bob Ross, two staples of PBS television for many decades. But did you ever catch PBS re-airing the BBC’s Sister Wendy’s Odyssey, Sister Wendy’s Grand Tour, or Sister Wendy’s Story of Painting?

I can remember thumbing through the limited number of channels before there were countless TV options and landing on these strange art shows hosted by a nun, of all people. With her soft South African accent, Sister Wendy gave insight into the story behind many art pieces.

“She was an unlikely celebrity: diminutive, dressed in a medieval-looking black habit of her own design, her lively and intelligent features offset by large spectacles,” said Robert Ellsberg on the CBF Podcast Conversation.

Ellsberg, the editor-in-chief and publisher of Orbis Books, has written a book about his fascinating pen-pal relationship with Wendy Becket, entitled: Dearest Sister Wendy. He also contributes to America and the National Catholic Reporter, authoring several books, including All Saints, The Saints Guide to Happiness, and A Living Gospel.
