By Andy Hale
Christian history is saturated with being on the wrong side of power, such as the baptism with blood by a Christianized Roman Empire, the Crusades, the Papal Sagas, a furious antisemitic Luther endorsing the slaughter of peasants during a revolt against the Germanic ruling elite, the validation of chattel slavery, and so on.
Today, Christians are no different than our forebearers. We all crave power in ways that may not be what God desires for us and the world.
“When Christians see power only in terms of the one power given in the world, they, in essence, blur the powers. God’s power and purposes get blurred with worldly, coercive power over,” urged Dr. David Fitch on the CBF Podcast Conversation.
Fitch, the Chair of Evangelical Theology at Northern Seminary, sat down with us to explore his new book, Reckoning with Power. David contributes to Missio Alliance, Christianity Today, and Ethics Daily and co-hosts the Theology of Mission podcast.
