‘Making good progress to receive teams’

Tents are part of the base of operations for response in Haiti.

The following is a report from Scott Hunter, a CBF short-term worker in Haiti who is working with CBF field personnel Nancy and Steve James on long-term recovery efforts:

We are settling in at Grand Guave and are making good progress to receive teams.  The only major task left is to get the water tower up and the shower toilet set ups in the base.  The rest is good to go.  The new tents are fantastic and we have enjoyed the dinning flys, except we learned not to leave the trash in the tents overnight, the dogs got in making a hole in the mesh which we can fix.

Samaritans Purse Came in yesterday and did about two weeks worth of work for us with a track hoe and trucks hauled off the rubble.  So the first teams will not be doing much demolition and we can go straight to construction.

The church is very excited about the teams that are coming we brought in the first load of sand today.  We will get a load of gravel after 5 this afternoon and start stock piling block as well.

It is great to have all the playful kids around and there is a lively game of soccer in the field next to us every afternoon.  The evenings are quiet and the starts are gorgeous.

Today we got the last big thing done before the first team arrives at the end of next week.

Herb did the main heavy lift work of getting all the plumbing set and the forms laid out for the foundation of the water tower that will also serve as the bathroom and shower facilities.  It was a long hot day but Herb made sure that once we started we would get it finished.  It turned out well and I am very much looking forward to have access to the facilities myself.  Thanks Herb for all the work.

Tomorrow we will head back to port and try and pick up the second water tower that will be used to distribute water to the residents around the church one outlet in the back and one in the front of the church.  This will take a heavy load of the community that spends a lot of time waiting for their turn at the pump to get the water they need for the day.  We also had a group from Sameritans Purse in picking up the rubble and again a greatful thank you for saving us a lot of work.

We will see if we can get the church members hard at it next week to prepare the area on the property line to make it ready to receive the foundation for the back wall of the school that will also serve as the property line.  We are hoping that the first team will be able to spend at least a portion of their time building the school rather then on demolition.  Thanks to Sameritans purse.

Thanks for all the prayers and other support that is going into this team effort.

God is good.

Scott
