How do you read the Bible?

In just a few weeks, Baptists from across Virginia will gather in Hampton Roads for the annual BGAV meeting to consider, “A Story Worth Living.”  I like this theme. Storytelling is a powerful point of connection and interpretation for Baptists. How we interpret our story and the Biblical story depends, however, upon the lens through which we see our world.

Dr. Caleb Oladipo offers a new perspective on our Christian story. Dr. Oladipo serves as the Duke K. McCall Professor of Christian Mission and World Christianity at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. In a recent ABP article by Robert Dilday, Dr. Oladipo contends that Christians in the developing nations read Scripture differently than their brothers and sister in the West.

That fact should not surprise us. However, Dr. Oladipo’s observation begs the question: as Christianity grows and prospers in the developing world, what can Christians in the West learn from the story of believers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America?

Dr. Oladipo invites us to consider a global witness. He will share his story at the CBFVA-BTSR luncheon on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the BGAV meeting. Will you join us?
