Ambiguous Mysteries and Confounding Certainties

Yesterday in my Sunday School class we talked about Paul’s address to the Greeks concerning their unknown God. The question was then asked, “Why do we need God?”

There was a long period of silence as the class pondered how to respond. A few of them were…
We need God to have a relationship we can deeply trust.
We need God to remind us we don’t have to fear.
We need God to remind us that we have significance.
We need God to show us who we are to become.

Then this answer, “We need God to give answers to the mysteries of life.” To which I responded, “Perhaps we need God to provide mystery to the answers of life.”

It seems the older I get the less certain I am about more and more. And, the older I get, the more ambiguity I am forced to deal with. I am confounded by those persons who are certain about everything. I am intrigued by those persons who live in the ambiguities of life.

Life is a dance between mystery and certainty. I’m choosing the mysteries of God to keep me searching and the certainties of God to keep me grounded. The trick is to figure out which to embrace when!

For those of us who dance between mystery and certainty, give us your guidance. Lord, hear our prayer!
