Together for Hope reaches 10-year milestone

After a decade, the assets-based approach of Together for Hope is making a difference in the fight against poverty in the rural areas of the United States.

In 2001, CBF made a 20-year commitment to the 20 poorest counties in the U.S. This commitment wasn’t to fix the counties. It was to come alongside the residents of these communities, help them see what assets were present and empower them to achieve their dreams.

Half-way through that commitment, the work is showing results.

“The roots are beginning to go more deeply,” said Tom Prevost, interim manager of the rural poverty initiative, during the Global Missions picnic. “We are getting closer to sustainability, and we are grateful to all who have participated in this work.”

The 20 poorest counties are found in five regions of the United States including the Rio Grande River Valley of Texas, the Mississippi River Delta, the Black Belt of Alabama, Appalachian areas of Kentucky and the high plains of South Dakota.
