Born into slavery in the 1860s, Ida B. Wells, leveraged a career in investigative journalism to combat racial injustice and promote the cause of women’s suffrage.

Wells was the embodiment of strength, endurance, courage, and justice.

“Brave men do not gather by thousands to torture and murder a single individual, so gagged and bound he cannot make even feeble resistance or defense,” Wells wrote in 1900.

The life and legacy of Ida B. Wells continue to this day as we face communities, a country, and a world filled with injustice.

“Ida is still speaking in a voice that is more powerful than ever. She held the paradoxes in her hands and her heart. She lived in a world of affluence and never let herself forget those with nothing,” said Catherine Meeks and Nibs Stroupe on the CBF Podcast.

Meeks is a retired distinguished professor of socio-cultural studies at Wesleyan College and serves as the director of Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing.

Stroupe recently retired the pastorate at Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Georgia.

We sat down with the co-authors to discuss the life and times of Ida B. Wells, as well as the challenge her legacy thrusts upon us.
